Congratulations Christina!

1) How long have you been in CF?

I’ve been at CrossFit Reform for a year and 9 months…June will be 2 years…

2) How did you come across CF?

I’ve been in the workout world via Family Fitness/24 hr Fitness since high school; participated in GoRucks (3 races), Tough Mudders (2 races), 17 half marathons and 1 marathon, always being exposed to CrossFit folks and their crazy workouts…knowing I should take the leap and give it a try because I like a good challenge. But I was scared to get hurt and not be able to live an active lifestyle as I’m accustomed to. It wasn’t until I lead my own workout group of ladies in Robinson Ranch for 3 years, that I realized I needed something more…I was going home after my classes, doing second workouts because I still had more to leave on the mat. My husband encouraged me one day to step out and give CrossFit a try. I believe he said, babe, we’re not getting any younger, now’s the time. I was 40 at the time…I had seen Reform too many times to count and finally walked in to check it out one afternoon when Little Eric was training the 4 o’clock class. The rest is history…I started coming at 9:30 am, but switched to 8:15 am because I prefer the earlier time, but more importantly, I grew attached to the folks and don’t like starting my days without them.

3) What are your favorite movements/lifts? What are your least favorite? Any recent PRs you would like to mention?

I love me some back squats and deadlifts…I finally got the kipping motion of pull-ups, and although I can’t do more than 6-8 at a time, it feels like a real accomplishment to be able to do a confounded pull-up!!
Least favorite you ask? I struggle with overhead squats the most. My shoulders don’t like being flexible..so I blame them.
PR’s? I jumped from a 185lb pr for deadlift in June 2020, to 225 lb in Nov 2020, to 255lbs in Jan 2021. My back squat is 195lb. from June 2020 as well, and I’m hoping to do at least 200lb sometime soon!

4) What is one goal you would like to set for yourself regarding CF?

I’d love to PR in squats like I mentioned above, but I’d really love to get muscle ups and strand together double unders instead of my usual 3-4 every other jump. Double unders makes me say not nice things in my mind or want to have a temper tantrum…but a 41 yr old can’t or shouldn’t, rather, behave that way. Darn.

5) Do you have a favorite girl or hero WOD?

Nope…they’re all not nice ladies, but I still obey them and do their looney workouts.

6) Where are you from?

I was born in Huntington Beach, moved to Colorado for 5+ years, then my parents got divorced so my mom and sister moved back to CA in Irvine in ’87. I’ve lived here ever since. I may have spent most of my years in the OC, but my favorite places are in the mountains in Mammoth or Colorado.

7) If you could have one super power, what would it be and why??

I don’t think in terms of physical power, are we not more than flesh and blood? I wish I had wisdom to know exactly what to say and do in any situation. Sometimes I’m at a loss for words with people….”finding” the perfect response or reaction afterwards, but the moments passed. I don’t want to be known for being wise, because I don’t want the attention on me. I want to pour into people whether it’s encouragement, truth, compassion. Jesus was brilliant at this; speaking what needed to be said in the way they could best hear it. Intentional speech is important and powerful…especially in the semantic wars our culture’s engaged in.

8) If you were granted three wishes, what would they be?

My mom has suffered with Multiple Sclerosis for nearly 40 years…I’d wish for her complete healing in a second.
My second wish would be to guarantee unnecessary pain and suffering for my boys, Joshua and Samuel, and any other children we have. Struggle is important for strong character and the ability to be long-suffering…time under tension, right? We practice this every day in CrossFit hoping for pr’s when the time comes.
My third wish would be for a long and full life with my husband, Kevin. I’d wish for no cancer or heart disease to take us away from one another. These diseases are prevalent in our families.

9) If you could host a dinner party with any three people, dead or alive, who would you have attend?

Jesus, for sure, Paul the Apostle, and my Grandma Cherry. She died when I was just 6 months old…. She held me and got to know me a smidge.

10) Share one thing that people in the gym would not know about you.

I used to figure skate in CO at the Olympic Figure Skating Arena. I spent hours watching the Olympians dance on ice, wishing I’d do the same when I grew up.

11) How has CF changed your life?

I like a good challenge…I want to know how far I can be pushed and if I can accomplish whatever crazy is being asked of me. CrossFit has answered that question again…and again. I want to be strong and competent even though I’m well aware of my weaknesses, not just physical. Time under tension like I mentioned previously, is important in becoming the woman Christ is making me to be. CrossFit pushes me to a place that produces fruit I want to see more and more in my life.

12) Would you like to give any shout outs to those in the gym who have encouraged you or inspired you?

Oh goodness, the 8:15 crew are so incredible, I’m in awe every class we do together. Katie, Rico, Danny, both Romero’s, Riley….the weight they push around is mind blowing. Buff is my favorite partner and is always encouraging me on and off the mat. Zeus and Corey gently push and know the right moment and words to get me through a tough movement. Coming into the gym is like walking into Cheers, the old tv show from the 80’s…I’m known and loved. What could be any better than that?
