Congratulations Ben R.!
How long have you been in CF?
I started in 2011.
How did you come across CF?
My wife started first. And the box where she was going was started by a group of girls, so I thought CrossFit was a girls thing, and resisted joining for a long time. I remember feeling strangely embarrassed when I finally showed up. After my first visit, I was hooked.
What are your favorite movements/lifts? What are your least favorite? Any recent PRs you would like to mention?
My favorites are pull-ups and muscle-ups. Bodyweight movements are my jam.I hate me some thrusters, though. If CrossFit banned thrusters, I’d be happy.
What have been your goals for 2015?
Consistency: 5 days/week
Do you have a favorite girl or hero WOD?
Annie’s my favorite. It’s a 2-movement combo I can blast through. My favorite hero WOD is 31 Heroes. Some of my friends at a previous box, which was in a military town, had a close connection with the heroes that the wod is named for. Doing the workout with them felt like I was really honoring the fallen heroes. It was physically, and emotionally, draining. It’s also a partner wod, and I find I tend to push myself more when I’m partnered up.
Where are you from?
Tennessee. My family and I moved to California about a year ago from the Nashville area. We were driving around RSM, saw the CF Reform sign on a Saturday morning, and stopped by to check it out. We met Mike and Jeff, and based on their love of the box, and the community and culture they described, we knew we wanted to be a part.
If you could have any super hero power, what would it be?
If you had a time machine, which part of your life would you revisit?
I’d go back to my college years. I didn’t realize how amazing life was while I was in college. I took a few classes in the morning, then played for my college’s golf team all afternoon. 6 days/week.
If you could host a dinner party with any three people, dead or alive, who would you have attend?
CS Lewis, Jimmy Fallon, Jesus.
Share one thing that people in the gym would not know about you.
I’m a published author, and my book was an Amazon bestseller.
How has CF changed your life?
I started CF just before I turned 30. I played competitive sports throughout college, but as I grew older and approached 30, I realized I was growing more and more inactive. My metabolism was starting to slow down, and I was noticing pudge in areas I hadn’t noticed before. I wasn’t growing healthy physically. And in the industry I work, especially in the South where I grew up, there’s a prototypical “fat old guy” stereotype that I refused to fall into. CrossFit has absolutely helped me be more active, and has helped me make better nutrition choices, too. The way I feel the day after eating junk is a huge motivator. But what I love the most about CrossFit is the community. It’s the relationships that keep me coming back every day and push me to do more.
Would you like to give any shout outs to those in the gym who have encouraged you or inspired you?
Yes!! My 7 am crew!! Laura (my wife), Ryan and Kacee, Dave and Imelda, Haley, Joe, Anthony, Lesley, Melissa, Jeff B…y’all make me better!! Also, the coaching at Reform is stellar. This is the 3rd box I’ve been a member of, and I can say with great confidence that our coaches are phenomenal. Their expertise, and the culture they create, makes our gym worth being a part of.
