In today’s digital age, kids are spending less time outdoors than ever before. Tablets, video games, and virtual reality have started to replace the simple joys of climbing trees, playing tag, and riding bikes. But while technology brings new opportunities for learning and connection, it has also contributed to a more sedentary lifestyle for many kids, one that can have lasting impacts on their health and well-being.
The Reality of Sedentary Lifestyles for Kids
Leading an inactive lifestyle is one of the biggest risk factors for childhood obesity. Studies show that obese children are five times more likely to remain obese as adults, which can lead to numerous health issues, both physical and mental. Our kids were meant to move, to be challenged, and to learn new things, not to spend hours staring at screens in isolation. But as parents, caregivers, and mentors, we face a big question: How do we help our kids discover the joy of being active?
How to Encourage Kids to Move
The answer lies in creating positive, enjoyable opportunities for physical activity. Kids are more likely to stick with active habits when they’re having fun, engaging with friends, and feeling a sense of accomplishment. Here are a few ways to encourage this active lifestyle:
- Organized Sports: Signing kids up for team sports like soccer, basketball, or swimming can be a great way for them to socialize, develop coordination, and build resilience.
- Play Dates with Purpose: Set up play dates that include physical activities—whether it’s a game of tag, a nature hike, or a mini obstacle course in the backyard.
- Active Camps and Programs: Programs specifically designed for kids can introduce them to fitness in a positive, structured way.
Why We Created Our Youth Program at CrossFit Reform
At CrossFit Reform, we believe that developing an early love for movement is essential for lifelong health. That’s why we created our Youth Program—not just to get kids moving, but to provide a safe, supportive environment where they can learn about fitness in a way that builds confidence and joy. Both of my kids are actively involved in this program, and I’ve seen firsthand how it positively impacts their growth, not only physically but mentally and socially as well.
Our program focuses on teaching kids how to move safely, learn new skills, and overcome challenges. They play games, encourage each other, and work through tasks together, fostering a spirit of teamwork and resilience that they’ll carry into other areas of their lives. For kids, this environment feels like play, but it’s also laying the groundwork for a positive relationship with fitness and health that can last a lifetime.
The Long-Term Impact of Positive Fitness Experiences for Kids
If kids have positive experiences with health and fitness early on, they’re more likely to prioritize it as they grow. An active lifestyle doesn’t just mean healthier bodies; it also supports better mental health, improves focus, builds social skills, and increases overall happiness. When kids see movement as fun rather than a chore, they’re more likely to embrace it as part of their everyday lives.
Creating a Healthier Future for Our Kids
Encouraging kids to be active today means helping them build the habits that lead to a healthier, more active life as adults. We need to give our kids the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of movement, discovery, and play. Whether it’s through organized sports, family activities, or a structured fitness program, the key is to make physical activity a positive experience they look forward to.
