The book I’ve been reading recently really stuck with me because it puts words to something we talk about often at CrossFit Reform, even if we don’t always frame it this way.
The book is Outlive by Peter Attia (highly recommended 👌), and one of its core ideas is the difference between lifespan and healthspan.
What’s the Difference Between Lifespan and Healthspan?
Lifespan is simple: how long you live.
Healthspan is more important: how long you live well.
Healthspan focuses on the quality of your life, not just the quantity of years. It includes:
- Moving without pain
- Being strong, capable, and energetic
- Keeping your mind sharp
- Maintaining purpose, relationships, and independence
The goal isn’t just to add years to your life, it’s to add life to your years.
Attia describes this as “squaring the curve”: staying strong and capable for as long as possible, instead of slowly declining and struggling through the later years of life.
That idea perfectly describes why we do what we do at Reform, with the focus on longevity and functionality.
Healthspan in Action: Tim’s Story
Reading this made me think immediately of Tim and his journey.
Tim joined us in March of last year because he wanted to reverse the effects of years of poor eating and inconsistent exercise. This was his first real gym experience. He wasn’t chasing aesthetics or a quick fix, he wanted to live better and feel better long-term.
As of today:
- He’s lost 70 pounds
- He’s down 3 pant sizes
- His resting heart rate is lower
- His blood pressure is under control
- He is no longer considered diabetic
- He completes workouts without stopping and without an inhaler
That’s not just weight loss, it’s healthspan in action.
One of Tim’s proudest moments so far was completing the Memorial Day Murph workout. Now he’s already looking ahead to lifting heavier, setting personal records, and even working toward a long-term goal of summiting Mount Whitney.
Fitness Isn’t About Extremes—It’s About Being Prepared for Life
Tim’s story is a reminder that fitness isn’t about punishment or perfection. It’s about being prepared for life, whether that’s today, next year, or decades from now.
That’s what healthspan is all about.
If Tim’s story resonates with you, or if you’d like help focusing on extending your own healthspan and quality of life, you don’t have to do it alone. We can help!
